welcome to all you watching in the united states, canada, around the world. i m kim brunhuber with cnn s continuing coverage of the israel/hamas war. it s 10:00 a.m. in gaza where we have two major developments. right now the israeli military is expected to open a safe road for people to leave gaza city and head south. this as israeli forces fight their way into the city. the idf says the offer of safe passage to civilians is only good for four hours until 2:00 p.m. local time. one of the refugee camps south of the line where palestinians have been told to go was hit by a deadly explosion several hours ago. a palestinian hospital official says more than 30 were killed and more than 100 wounded. israeli military hasn t commented on whether it targeted the area. cnn s ivan watson joins us from hong kong with more. let s start with that explosion in the gaza refugee camp. what more are we learning about this? reporter: alling me gauzei. according to the united nations, it is v
fall he would not be able to stop. reporter: the injured climber has not been identified but he s back home in malaysia. the climbing season is short. extending only from march to may. but in this season alone, nepally officials say cnn 12 people have died and 5 missing making it one of the deadliest climbing seasons on record. the government there says a record number of permits to climb were issued, 478. veteran climber conrad anchor says there needs to be a capacity study done to determine how many can be on the mountain safely at a given time. currently there are too many climbers and by experience it should be a lottery or they can do it individually. reporter: what did gelje sherpa and his client give up? conrad anchor says clients pay between $40,000 and $250,000 for a guided climb up mount everest.
cnn s arwa damon is in kathmandu, nepal. arwa, what more can you tell us about why this year has been so much worse? reporter: erica, expert mountaineers are saying that this year was especially difficult for a number of factors that could be what contributed to all of these deaths. most of them from altitude sickness and most of them not as climbers were on their way up to the summit, but rather, as they were coming down. that dramatic photograph on social media, on instagram, that shows that long line of climbers. that was taken in what is known as the death zone. and there s a reason why it s called that. because when you re at that altitu altitude, every breath you take in only gives you a third of the oxygen that you would get when you re breathing in at sea level. a lot of these climbers succumbing to altitude sickness as they re descending. now, the backlog created perhaps for a number of different factors. some are criticizing the nepally
