IT S beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Neilston.after the village gained a sustainable tree that can be used to celebrate the festive season every year. The giant fir tree has been planted as part of a revamp of Pig Square, near Main Street. Councillor Paul O’Kane confirmed that the latest addition to the village landscape can be lit each year – meaning there is no need to buy a new tree every time Christmas comes around. Until now, the costs involved in bringing in a festive tree have normally had to be met by local businesses or the Neilston War Memorial Association (NWMA).
AFTER surviving horrific wounds in an explosion in Afghanistan in 2009, David Timmins had so much to live for. The East Renfrewshire soldier impressed family and friends with his courage as he battled back from injuries that included a fractured skull and a collapsed lung, as well as the loss of his right eye. And life took an exciting new twist for David when he discovered his fiancée, Liane Brophy, was expecting their first baby in July. His tragic death on January 6 means he will never get to meet that baby but loved ones will make sure the new arrival knows all about his heroic deeds.
TRIBUTES have been paid to a war hero from Neilston after he died at the age of 39. David Timmins lost an eye and suffered horrific internal injuries as a result of an explosion in Afghanistan while he was taking part in Operation Panther’s Claw in July 2009. He was later awarded the Queen s Gallantry Medal for saving a badly-injured comrade just days earlier and for his work defusing Taliban mines. The highly-respected Lance Corporal was a member of the Royal Logistic Corps Explosive Device Disposal Team 5 – celebrated as ‘The Famous Five’ for their impressive record of dismantling deadly devices. David, who was found dead at his parents home in Neilston on January 6, has been described as a real-life superhero.
