Needham news briefs Banking official elected Needham Town Meeting member  Laura Dorfman, Dedham Savings executive vice president of residential and consumer lending, was elected a Needham Town Meeting member on April 13.    In this role, Dorfman will collaborate with fellow Town Meeting members to approve annual budgets and town by-laws and conduct general town business. A longtime Needham resident, Dorfman has served on the Needham Historical Commission as well as the conservation committee for several years.   “I am deeply honored to be elected to the Town Meeting by the voters of Needham,” Dorfman said. “I look forward to leveraging my local real estate and municipal experience to address the issues affecting our town, hearing from constituents and getting to know my colleagues in town government.”

Newton will spend nearly $1.5 million in preservation grants to repair and restore the bell tower of Grace Episcopal Church, the city council voted March 1, marking the first time councilors have allocated Community Preservation Act funds to a religious organization. The 17-5 decision came after what councilors described as a rush of public support for the project, which church leaders said could now be underway by the summer. Project advocates had maintained that barring a seven-figure contribution from the city, the 19th-century tower likely would get torn down.
