In preparation for the November JAZZ ROOM performance, we get to know Grammy-nominated pianist John Chin and his approach to jazz. “When you think of a jazz musician, what do you see? I can most certainly guess that it’s not me,” notes John Chin in a June article in the JazzTimes. With the history of inclusion in jazz, John will speak to us about how this relates to his experience as an Asian American. John Chin’s Trio will be sharing the music of McCoy Tyner, whose sophisticated chords and dramatic rhythms shaped modern jazz piano. We will speak to John about that style and how it has informed his own music.
