JazzArts Charlotte’s virtual series presents the funky hypnotic sounds of Cannoli. Malcolm Charles, a frequent jazz drummer in the JAZZ ROOM, brings his breadth of artistry to this trio, in the role of leader, keys, and vocalist. Cannoli’s funky jazz sound was influenced by Parliament-Funkadelic, Herbie Hancock, and J Dilla.

Ron Brendle is a first-call bass player in the Charlotte jazz scene. A master musician for over 40 years, Ron has received seven awards as Jazz Artist of the Year by Creative Loafing Magazine and three as Best Bass Player by Charlotte Magazine. An innovator on bass guitar, not only has Brendle played on over 50 albums but has released close to a dozen albums as a leader and has played on record and stage with the likes of legends Mose Allison, Dizzy Gillepsie, Hank Crawford, Sheila Jordan, Frank Kimbrough, and many more. Enjoy an evening with Butler’s high energy arrangements of jazz standards with a stellar group of seasoned musicians and young upstarts from our own Jazz Academy.
Mitch Butler has been the trombonist and arranger for a number of critically acclaimed musical groups, including the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (Grammy Award for large jazz ensemble with the release of the recording Book One) and the international award-winning jazz group JazzBonez. Adding the role of producer to his resume, Butler teamed up with Grammy Award-winning producer Richard Seidel in 2017, where he served as musical director for critically acclaimed vocalist Tiffany Austin and her second album Unbroken. Butler has also performed and/or recorded with musical greats Dee Dee Bridgewater, Curtis Fuller, Tia Fuller, Derrick Gardner, Robert Glasper, Slide Hampton, Conrad Herwig, Branford Marsalis, Bob Mintzer, Melt

Shane Wheeler is part of a new wave of young jazz musicians on the scene today. His playing and writing is steeped in blues with a more modern harmonic and rhythmic take. This premiere will showcase Shane’s first album, “Unheard,” released earlier this year
