Privateers are seizing our ships on the high seas, this is an insult and there is an increasing clamor in britain to do something about it. Also some of the tension between british and spanish over something that is basically a slave trading contract. It is a 30 Year Contract that gave britain the right to furnish slaves to spanish colonies. There was specific numbers on that. There was one incident in particular is that later gave this conflict the name, war of jenkins year it was in fact a result of one of the ships, the rebecca, that had been seized by the spanish, the captain was a man named Robert Jenkins and he had his ear cut off. It was severed. Everyone handed it was handed back to him. To him it was symbolic. He gets his ear cut off in 1771 but talks to the government, theres a carton of him talking to the Prime Minister. Weve had these images sent from the Italian Coast Guard. This is from the helicopter as they winch down some of their guards to help those onboard. Theres no power on this vessel, and as i said, no crew either. They have to tow it into port. The 400 or so migrants have just been drifting helpless in some pretty heavy seas. The boat is said to be about 60 kilometers from capo santo maria. Its the second migrant ship in a week adrift with no crew on choppy seas. James reynolds is our correspondent.
