The Duke of Edinburgh s half-forgotten but peerless military career

A wartime photograph of HRH Prince Philip as Lieutenant Commander Like many veterans, the Duke of Edinburgh was modest about his military career. As a result, few of us are aware of quite how illustrious, and at times perilous, it was – and, by extension, how much he did for his country. His naval career began when he was just 17 when, after leaving Gordonstoun, he joined Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth as a cadet in May 1939. Two months later, in July 1939, came the famous meeting with the then Princess Elizabeth, and in September, war was declared. Philip passed out from Dartmouth at the beginning of 1940, already marked out for a great naval future having won two awards, the King’s Dirk and the Eardley Howard Crocket prize for best Cadet of his entry.

Breaking News | The love story of the century (1)

By Obadiah Mailafia PRINCE Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, passed away on Friday April 9, aged 99. He was barely two months away from his 100th birthday. He will be buried on Saturday April 17 at the cemetery at Windsor Castle after a family funeral service at St. George’s Chapel. In strict adherence to his wishes, it would be a low-key family affair. It is the end of an era. For more than 70 years, the duke faithfully served as royal consort; putting duty before everything else; a loving husband and a doting father to his children. While she reigned as monarch, he held sway as head of the tribe; keeping “The Firm” in steady-state in good times and in bad. It has been said that a few bloodlines rule the world.
