Who are you portraying out here . They were known as the irish volunteers. They were from charleston, south carolina. The project is so special to us, we thought it would be good to honor a unit that actually camped here in the charleston area. We really like to sit in. We kind of put two and two together for us. They were a militia unit from 1787 andeston issue, actually remained active until the spanishamerican war. They were upperclass gentleman from the charleston area. The weather was a little bit different for them than they would have had. They suffered a great deal. The russians were very poor and they suffered a lot from sickness. We actually found some diaries from soldiers who camp here. Was one of the soldiers here, and we did Research Online for other diaries, so the internet has been a great source for finding information on these men. Introduce our next speaker, jennifer weber. Jennifer is an associate professor of history at the university of kansas. Where her specialty, no surprise, is the civil war. Her first book was copperheads for those of you who may not have a copy at home or have read it. And this, of course, is about the Antiwar Movement in the north. This was published by Oxford University press in 2006, and actually has a forward by jennifers mentor, james m. Macpherson. So you can tell she comes from a quality line. Her second book is actually geared for children, and this fact has won her a special place in the hearts of many of us in the Lincoln Group who really view the importance of sharing the story of lincoln and his heir, and our nations history with our youngest americans. That story tells the battle of gettysburg and is called summers bloodiest day. Jennifer actually right now is working on a book about conscription in the civil war area and the impact of conscription on the civil war north. Sh

We will talk about the various aspects of war crimes so it is very interesting connections. Our next speaker is Carole Emberton who is an associate professor of history at the university of buffalo. Carole works on the civil war era as does everyone else here. Her first book was beyond redemption race, violence and the american south. She is currently working on a book that will be titled a folk history of freedom, dealing with the federal projects, writers projects and the interviews of former slaves during the depression era. Her paper today is a hungry belly and freedom rations, refugees and reconstruction after the civil war. I am delighted to introduce Carole Emberton.
