Turkey should be sanctioned for Cyprus occupation, analyst says

Mar 11 2021 03:00 Gmt+3 Last Updated On: Mar 11 2021 03:03 Gmt+3 The United States, the European Union and their Arab allies should sanction Turkey until it ends its Cyprus occupation, Michael Rubin, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute said in an article for the National Interest on Wednesday. “It is time for serious sanctions on Turkey. Rather than slowly ratchet sanctions in a way that allows Ankara to adjust and bypass them, the goal should be to overwhelm Turkey and its already foundering economy,” Rubin said.   Cyprus has been divided since a Turkish invasion in 1974 responding to a Greek Cypriot coup that sought unification with Greece. The Greek Cypriot administration in the south, the Republic of Cyprus, is internationally regarded as the official government of the island, while the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC) is recognised only by Turkey.

Meanwhile, last week Biden s national security adviser articulated a China policy that mostly involves rebuilding American competitiveness and alliances implicitly without need for Beijing s involvement at all.

Mr. Blinken condemned the Navalny detention, as well as the recent arrests of scores of demonstrators. “We reiterate our call for the Russian government to immediately and unconditionally release Mr. Navalny, as well as the hundreds of other Russian citizens wrongfully detained in recent weeks for exercising their rights,” the secretary of state said in a statement, adding that the Biden administration plans to “coordinate closely with our allies and partners to hold Russia accountable.” On the campaign trail last year, Mr. Biden was sharply critical of former President Trump for pursuing personal relationships with autocratic foreign leaders such as Mr. Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, arguing Mr. Trump’s transactional approach undercut traditional American values.
