After making landfall in Muanza district, central Mozambique, in the early hours of 30 December, Tropical Storm Chalane tracked inland and entered Zimbabwe as a tropical depression.
The depression has brought rains and thunderstorms to Zimbabwe and is now considered a “very weak” tropical depression by the Zimbabwean authorities.

Tropical Storm Chalane, which made landfall in the district of Muanza, in Mozambique’s Sofala Province, in the early hours of 30 December, reportedly left at least two people dead and several injured in Sofala and Manica provinces, according to preliminary reports by the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC). In Sofala Province, at least 10,930 people (2,186 families) have been affected by Chalane. UN Technology Bank & UNITAR-UNOSAT enhance geospatial technologies for disaster management in Mozambique

The United Nations Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) – UNOSAT convened a workshop in Mozambique to enhance the capacity of expert and policymakers on the interpretation and utilisation of geospatial technologies.
The workshop aimed to demystify geospatial technologies and raising awareness of the vital role of supporting Mozambique’s development efforts. It was a part of a pilot programme, which was earlier also organized in Uganda and The Gambia and provided participants with the skills and knowledge to leverage geospatial technologies for improved disaster risk reduction management, climate change, and natural resources management.
Madagascar/Mozambique: Flash Update No.1: Chalane Weather System (As of 23 December 2020)

• A tropical depression has formed in the south-west part of the Indian Ocean.
• It is expected to develop into a tropical storm, named Chalane, and make landfall in Madagascar around 26 December.
• The storm could cause flooding, mudslides and damage due to high rainfall, gusty winds and rough seas.
• Early predictions indicate that the weather system could subsequently move towards central Mozambique, where Cyclone Idai hit nearly two years ago.
