Two of those happened within the first five weeks of 2021. But despite the pattern of incidents involving Guard Black Hawks, the Army’s aviation director in charge of operations, plans and training told Defense News in a recent interview that he did not believe there was a systemic problem across the fleet.

By COREY DICKSTEIN | STARS AND STRIPES Published: February 4, 2021 WASHINGTON The three Idaho Army National Guard pilots killed when their Black Hawk helicopter crashed during a training flight just outside Boise were all seasoned warrant officers and fathers, Guard officials said Thursday. The Idaho National Guard identified the pilots as Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jesse Anderson, 43; Chief Warrant Officer 3 George “Geoff” Laubhan, 39; and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Matthew Peltzer, 43. Anderson and Laubhan were from Boise, and Peltzer was from Nampa, just west of Idaho’s capital, the Guard said. Idaho Guard officials said Wednesday that the three had signaled about 7:45 p.m. local time Tuesday that they were returning to their Boise base after completing a routine training flight in the mountains near Lucky Peak State Park. Just 15 minutes later Idaho Guard officials were alerted the UH-60 Black Hawk’s emergency signal had been activated.

Flames had encircled them, hundreds of them. They were stranded with no hope of rescue, told instead to wade into the waters of the Mammoth Pool Reservoir and hope the fire would pass them by. But, as their prospects waned, a daring rescue mission was being organized.
Daniel Crouch, who had been trapped with his family behind the lines of a wildfire while on a camping trip, desperately retreated to the protective waters to escape certain death. He floated with his head just above the water s surface, dodging the embers that poured down and trying not to inhale the deadly smoke. His three-year-old grandson clung to a cooler lid nearby.
