In 1970, he joined the staff of the Iowa Democratic party where, in addition to campaign activities, he was an architect of the modern democratic conference. He became a special assistant in 1975 and was on senator tom harkins staff until 2013. He was the senior legislative onistant who focused appropriations, taxes, economic development, and infrastructure.
