The full soviet period but are predominantly about the 70s and early 80s. There is relatively little there about the stalin period. There are a few very interesting things, but much less about the stalin period than i had thought there might be. There is also a good deal less about the 50s and early 60s. As you move into the 60s, it increases, but particularly as in the the large majority of it deals with the 70s and early 80s. So you can find very important things there. Alexander vassiliev is another former kgb foreign Intelligence Officer. He was working on a project for the book that came out as haunted wood, which was coauthored he and the late Allen Weinstein coauthored. It came out i think in 1997 or 98. That book dealt with soviet espionage in the United States during the stalin era. And that book also was able to deal with only a very small portion of what vassiliev actually transcribed. He was allowed to work in a room where archivisted from the foreign intelligence archive b
Single qualified arabic speaking officer of a middle eastern background who can believe a believable muslim sharing his life, for christs sake, most case officers lived in the suburbs of virginia. We dont do that kind of thing. Right . Thats a great quote. Another quote this time from an active cia case officer, operations that include diarrhea as a way of life dont happen. While were on the subject i would add to this operations that include lack of toilet paper as a way of life dont happen either. Another thing that he says, im not sure i so much agree with that but interesting comment, we can discuss it that humint is characterized by risk adverse bureaucratic nature which mirrors the growing physical risk of american society. Interesting comment even though im skeptical about that one. And i would add to this, this is not gerechts point, this is my point, often because of that, because it is difficult for the older case officers to venture outside of safe western areas. Its difficu
There is also multiple capture the flag contests which is basically red team, blue team, offense, defense, how do you hack something, how do you defend something. How do you get certain targeted treasure chests. And, some of the level of skill in these competitions are what we normally say can only be done by nation states. And instead, you have hundreds and thousands of people who are engaging in these types of contests. I think that can satisfactorily bust a myth, only nationstate adversary what we have to be worried about. When the tools and techniques are available to everybody, it is very, very easy to take advantage of them. We also had an iot village, internet of things village. One of the highlights for me was that Remote Controllable wheelchair. I dont know why you would want to remotely control a wheelchair but somebody made this thing. And it was driving up and down the halls without anybody on it because somebody figured out how to gain access and control it and drive it ar
And honoring malala. The youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Tonight there are calls from around the world accountability and for prosecutions after the Senate Report on torture by the cia. The worlds media and even some American Allies are using language like scandalous, devastating and a grave violation of democratic values. There are many here in the United States defending the agency and the tactics it used on terror suspects. Libby casey reports. Water boarding, sleep deprivation, tactics used by the cia on tee takenees in the post 9 11 era. Experts say thats not president s call. Its not the president of the United States to conduct a criminal inquiry as to the action hes of somebody who works at the cia thats an independent prosecutor, who can look at this without any sort of political interference and conduct an investigation and reach a conclusion based on their own view of the facts. Reporter but there were calls on the senate floor from democrats for action. It
The white house is supposed to be dedicated to transparency. Reports have been issued months ago that still contains more redactions than it should. I can think of some that wonder why theyre there. Im gratified that we can finally shine light on this dark chapter because among the many lessons we can take from this report is that americans deserve more government transparency. Its essential to a strong democracy. Just yesterday the Senate Unanimously passed a bipartisan bill, the leahycornyn bill, that significantly improves the Free Trade Agreement of information act the freedom of in fact act. I think todays release of this act is another important victory for greater government transparency. So i strongly disagree with those who argue that this report should not come out. Those who have tried to pressure in silence senator feinstein. Dont place the blame on those who are telling the truth. Place the blame squarely where it belongs on those who authorized and carried out a systemati
