Paul Andrew Hutton is an american cultural historian. He is an awardwinning author. He is a documentary writer and television personality. Hi him him him him him he serves as a distinguished professor of history at the university of new mexico. As we all know, he is published quite widely in both scholarly academic venues and popular magazines. And he has reached a very large audience through that kind of work. His work has been recognized far and wide. He is a sixtime winner of the western writers of america spur award and a sixtime winner of the western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and western Heritage Museum for his work in both print and film. The west posted something. Western historian paul hutton delivered the keynote address. He described how william cody became a symbol of the frontier and influenced american perception of western culture. This is just over an hour. Welcome, everyone, to the final event of what has been a terrific three days. You know, when you start to plan these things, and you think we will have this person and that person and do all this stuff. There was this moment when we started to put the program on paper and said we have 36 different speakers on this thing. It exceeded our expectations certainly. And there are so many other things that go into what quality of life really means, how often do you move and your spouse get a job, that sort of thing. In terms of quality of service, were hearing more and more from our people that theyre sort of surprised by all this. What really matters to them more than keeping this high rate of growth is they want to fight in a modern and ready force. They want to go to work every day, and they want to have parts in the bin where they can repair the thing that they are entrusted with, they want to be able to drive it or fly it or sail it and feel confident that they are on a winning team. That matters. Its an intangible, but it makes a tremendous difference for our people, and we have to look after that as well as the quality of life piece. Secretary fox . Senator, i would just add that i think admiral winnefeld laid it out beautifully. I these intangibles, i think, are important as we look at any changes to retirement, for example, Going Forward.
Well, good morning, ladies and gentlemen. And its a great pleasure to be back here. It is not a quiet time in global events. In fact, i can never remember a more turbulent time. But what a better time to talk about the relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States. In fact, when Winston Churchill first used the term special relationship, he did it during his speech in fulton missouri. Which is of course better remembered for his use of the phrase iron curtain for the first time. But when churchill spoke about the special relationship, he did so as a wartime leader. It was basically an intelligence relationship, a military relationship. The somewhat gooeyeyed commentators are not for me, the concrete foundations that it has. This is a relationship about our security in a dangerous world. And there are so many threats in this very interdependent world. One of the changes that churchill would have been astonished to see is the level of interdependency that we now have. And
