Snap looks to enhance augmented reality features with acquisition of British research lab Ariel AI CNBC 1/26/2021 Sam Shead
Snap, the parent company of social media app Snapchat, has acquired a British artificial intelligence start-up called Ariel AI which focuses on augmented reality.
Ariel AI was founded in London in 2018 by a group of former Google and Facebook research scientists including Chief Executive Iasonas Kokkinos and Chief Technology Officer George Papandreou.

An international group of scientists is demanding scientific journals demand more transparency from researchers in computer-related areas when accepting their reports for publication.
They also want computational researchers to include information about their code, models and computational environments in published reports.
Their call, published in Nature Magazine in October, was in response to the results of research conducted by Google Health that was published in Nature last January.
The research claimed an artificial intelligence system was faster and more accurate at screening for breast cancer than human radiologists.
Google funded the study, which was led by Google Scholar Scott McKinney and other Google employees.
V7 Labs raises $3M to help AI teams ‘automate’ training data workflows
V7 Labs, the makers of a computer vision platform that helps AI teams “automate” and future-proof their training data workflows as advances in AI continue, has picked up $3 million in funding. Leading the seed round is Amadeus Capital Partners, with participation from Partech, Nathan Benaich’s Air Street Capital and Miele Venture.
Founded in 2018 by Singularity University alumnus Alberto Rizzoli and former R&D lead at RSI, Simon Edwardsson (the same team behind “seeing” app Aipoly), the V7 Labs platform promises to accelerate the creation of high-quality training data by 10-100x. It does this by giving users the ability to build automated image and video data pipelines, organize and version complex data sets, and train and deploy “state-of-the-art” vision AI models.
