Nathan Bain is looking to take a stranglehold on the $500 Hiawatha Horse Park Handicapping Challenge. He outscored rival Nicholas “Ace” Barnsdale 78 points to 63 in Saturday (July 17) action at the Sarnia, Ont. oval.
Bain clicked with five of his 12 top selections on the day, including Best Bet Pickles On Top ($2.80), who took race seven in a sparkling 1:55.2f for leading driver Marc St Louis. Last year s Leamington Youth Handicapping Challenge champ tallied points in 10 of the 12 races. Barnsdale, who selected the most winners in the New Year s Eve USHWA Youth Handicapping Challenge, correctly forecasted four Hiawatha winners Saturday, also going with Pickles On Top as his Best Bet.

Nicholas Barnsdale edged closer to leader Nathan Bain, outscoring him by three points in Saturday, July 3rd action in the $500 Hiawatha Horse Park Handicapping Challenge.
Bain, who blasted to the front and has led the contest from the outset, now leads 207 points to 200 after three cards of racing at the Sarnia 5/8-mile oval. There are 11 race days remaining in the meet.
Barnsdale hit for six winners on the 12-race card while Bain correctly forecasted the winner of five races. Both handicappers were on point with Best Bet Highland Mowgli who set an all-age track record trotting to an Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots win in 1:54.3, the fastest mile ever trotted in the three-decade history of Hiawatha Horse Park.
Nathan Bain edged his rival Nicholas Ace Barnsdale by another slim margin of five points in Saturday s (June 26) Hiawatha Horse Park Handicapping Challenge. That boosted Bain’s lead to 10 points, with plenty of action still left in the contest.
Bain struck for four winners on the 11-race card, including an ice-cold Pick 3 in Races 4 through 6, while Barnsdale correctly forecasted three winners. Bain racked 53 points on the day to Barnsdale’s 48. Bain’s overall contest lead stands at 129 to Barnsdale’s 119.
With 12 cards of racing remaining in the Sarnia, Ontario track s 2021 meet, the contest outcome is far from decided between the two closely-matched handicappers. Both are USHWA Youth members, respectively known for their racecalls (Bain) and journalism (Barnsdale), in addition to picking winners.
Edison Hatter, USHWA Youth handicapping contest winner
New Year s Eve 2021 saw a close battle to the end of the 14-race harness racing card at Red Shores Charlottetown, and not just among horses and drivers. US Harness Writers Association (USHWA) Youth members of legal wagering age in their state/province were invited to handicap the only live races in Canada December 31, for non-cash prizes and bragging rights. It was a fun, skill-based competition, with zero pressure or expectation of betting.
Nicholas Ace Barnsdale (USHWA Canada chapter) opened the competition by being the lone handicapper to pick #9 Elm Grove Misty (Dave Kelly), a 2/1 winner in race 1. (The contest was judged based on hypothetical $2 win-place-show bet totals, as opposed to total number of winners.) Edison Hatter (Delaware Valley chapter) and Tony Elliott (Canada chapter) tied for the lead in race 2, when Barnsdale s selection #2 Lofty Shadow did not finish due to broken equipment; their co-selection #1 Monty
