we re following the breaking news in chardon, ohio. a suspect is in custody. the investigation is unfolding. here s the news conference that s happening right now. and rapidly. yesterday s event, as a result of that training and practice, if you would, law enforcement was quickly placed inside the school upon arrival. and we believe that that helped to lessen the tragedy that occurred. unfortunately, much had occurred prior to law enforcement s arrival. i d like to bring joe bernance, chardon s school superintendent to speak. first of all, i d like to thank our law enforcement for working with us so diligently over the last couple of hours. noejs, our sympathy goes out to the five victims in the case, there s not a lot you can say when you are responsible for the safety of 3100 kids, other than the fact that we re going to do the best we can to make sure our schools continue to be safe and continue to work with law enforceme enforcement. we have grief counselors available
good evening tonight. we add another name to that searing list that begins with columbine and virginia tech. it is the small town of chardon, ohio. 5,000 people who live right outside cleveland known for their serenity and maple syrup till today when a local high school student opened fire in the school cafeteria as his panicked classmates tried to race to safety. when it was over, one student was killed. four injured. one heroic teacher credited with saving a lot of lives. abc has been tracking this story from chardon all day. reporter: the horror here at chardon high school just behind me started just after 7:30 a.m. two students tonight are fighting for their lives. the call came in at 7:38 this morning. we have an active shooter at the high school. repeat, active gunshots at the high school. reporter: when it was over one student was dead and four others wounded. nate mueller was in the cafeteria eating breakfast with friends when the carnage started. he saw the all
pelley: good evening. we start tonight with a story that sent a chill through parents today parents who send their kids to school trusting and hoping that they will be safe. but in one of those schools, a high school in ohio today, the worst happened. the police say a student opened fire on classmates leaving one dead and four others wounded two of them in critical condition. it happened at chardon high school, 30 miles south of cleveland. it will alleged shooter is a teenaged boy said to be in custody tonight. we have late word from law enforcement sources that a day or two ago he told his classmates something of his plans but those classmates didn t take him seriously michelle miller is on the scene tonight. michelle? reporter: scott, police are withholding the name of the suspect because he is a juvenile but he is said to be cooperating with authorities and told investigators that he stole the gun from his uncle. we have an active shooter at the high school. repo
and three of the victims were at my table as well. reporter: mueller was grazed by one the gunshots. right here on my ear. i was actually as i was turning away from the gunman he caught me right on the ear. i got lucky. somebody was looking over me i guess. five of his classmates were not. one killed during the rampage, four others rushed to area hospitals. i certainly hope the families know they re in our thoughts and prayers. reporter: as the prayers continue so does the search for answers here. witnesses describe the gunman as silent and determined during his attack. the teenager was apparently forced from the building by a teacher and surrendered to bystanders a few blocks from the school. many caught in the cross fires say they never had any clues the suspect might turn violent. i don t think anybody ever expected it to be him. never would you ever think this i mean, it s just one of your worst nightmares. you don t think this would ever happen. unfortu
