A black bear climbed a tree in a San Anselmo backyard on Thursday, causing a neighborhood to shelter in place. The bear eventually came down on its own with some encouragement from first responders and headed out into open space.
SAN ANSELMO, Calif. - San Anselmo became bear country for several hours on Thursday.
A black bear weighing about 200 pounds was spotted in a backyard, triggering a local shelter-in-place precaution.
The bear was about 40 feet up in a tree near Tamalpais Avenue and Cedar Street.

A lost black bear was spotted 40 feet up a tree in the backyard of a home in Marin County, California, on Thursday.
Police arrived at the house in the town of San Anselmo at around 4:45 p.m. after residents reported seeing the 200-pound animal in the yard, ABC 7 reported.
As word of the bear sighting spread around the neighborhood, which is just a few blocks from downtown, locals began to gather hoping to catch a glimpse of the animal.

A resident walked and showed NBC Bay Area’s Cheryl Hurd through her backyard Thursday including where the bear left the neighborhood.
Residents took some pictures taken right before his escape show a young and frightened a California black bear.
The entire neighborhood came out to look at the animal clinging to a tree limb. People were with their cell phones snapping and sharing pictures.
“I heard a helicopter for about an hour and a half. I thought it was a manhunt. When I heard it was a bear, I was actually relieved, said San Anselmo resident Natalie Harvey. “He was beautiful. He was kind of positioned I could see the back of him then he moved you could see his head, pretty large.”
