A rustle of dry leaves, distant subdued growls and an occasional splash of water are the only sounds that can be heard on a hot sultry day at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP), popularly known as Vandalur zoo, in Chennai. With the mercury shooting up steadily, zoo authorities are creating cool zones for the 2,600 animals and birds from 180 species.

As the city sizzles under soaring day time temperatures, the authorities of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park are gearing up with special arrangements to protect the 810 animals of 90 species from the sweltering heat.
Zoo to organise 3K run on April 8

A 3K run, Run for Wildlife, is being organised by the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP), on the occasion of National Zoo Lovers Day on April 8.
According to the zoo officials, the run would start at the main gate of the IGZP and would cover the sprawling zoo premises and return to the main entrance. In this 3-km stretch, participants can witness all kinds of wild animal species at the IGZP. Children to adults of all age groups can participate in the run, said IGZP Curator Nandani Salaria.

The three-day training for National Zoo Keepers on ‘Captive Management of Reptiles’ at Indira Gandhi Zoological Park concluded here on Wednesday.
Participants from 40 zoo parks across the country participated in the event. Basic biology of reptiles such as turtles, snakes and crocodiles were explained with practical sessions during the programme by Dr. Gowri Mallapur from Central Zoo Authority (CZA), New Delhi.
Dr Mallapur answered participants’ doubts after the sessions. DIG of CZA Sonali Ghosh opined that such training programmes should be conducted more frequently in the future. IGZP curator Nandani Salaria thanked the CZA.

With an idea to reduce use of fuel-run vehicles and sound pollution on the zoo premises, officials from Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) have launched e-bikes facility in the zoo. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Forces) N. Prateep Kumar and Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Rahul Pandey launched the e-bikes in the zoo here on Tuesday.
