Stories of Workers Who Built Akron Rubber Industry Will Accompany New Display

Provided by the Akron Stories project with permission from Lucille Esposito Lucille Esposito recorded a story about her mother, Filomene Mae Riccilli, shown at right in this photo, who worked at BF Goodrich from 1933-1976. At one time the rubber industry employed more than 72,000 workers in Akron. Many Akronites have ancestors who worked in the industry. And it attracted one population in particular. As the city unveils a new statue Thursday in tribute to those workers, we hear some of the stories that visitors will be able to listen to at an accompanying interactive kiosk. “He heard that there was work up in Akron and he came up to Akron.”

Honey Creek Garden Club plant sale to benefit local students

(WTWO/WAWV) Area residents can beautify their homes with plants while supporting local students’ futures on Saturday, when the Honey Creek Garden Club holds its annual plant sale. Club president Nancy Bauer said in addition to a wide variety of plants, they will also offer crafts for sale. Proceeds will support two scholarships the club awards each year to students studying areas like agriculture and horticulture. “Anderson’s Plants and Produce will be here to offer a variety of bedding plants, perennials, vegetables practically anything you would want and the members of the Garden Club will be dividing plants from their home that we will bring to sell, as well, so you can get those at a very reduced price,” Bauer said.

Robert R Claypool Long-time Los Altos resident Robert R Claypool died from Covid-19 on December 30 th at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Gatos.  He was 93 years old. Bob was born and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  He was a good student who loved learning.  The school principal let him come to school early and use her office to study.  He rode his bicycle to the other side of Milwaukee to visit his aunt and uncle, who taught him his love for classical music.  He graduated early from high school in 1944, in order to join the Naval Air Corps.  He learned to fly in an open cockpit, fabric-covered biplane, and thus began his lifelong love of flying.  Though the war ended before he flew in combat, he always considered himself a Navy man.
