The Shiv Sena had forced its then alliance partner, the BJP, to shelve the project in 2019 due to opposition from locals. Today, however, it is proposing to relocate the project in the same taluka as was initially proposed.
Maharashtra Minister of Tourism and Environment Aaditya Thackeray visited the Nanar Refinery on Wednesday and said that Maharashtra Chief Minister has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggesting alternate sites for the Nanar project.

Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Uddhav Thackeray reiterated that the proposed oil refinery project will not come up at Nanar village in Ratnagiri district.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday (10 March), Thackeray said, âI donât change my stand on a whim. It may be a beneficial project for the State, but locals are against it. A few people met me saying they had purchased plots near the proposed site. I am not going to change my decision for them. We are committed to the locals.â
