The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is assessing the potential impact of the export of cocoa beans by China on the local cocoa industry.
Relatedly, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has intimated that China’s entry into the production and export of cocoa beans must not in any way hurt Ghana’s industry.
The two entities were sharing their thoughts on the potential impact of China’s export of cocoa beans to the global market.

The Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) recently reported that South China s island province of Hainan had exported cocoa beans to Belgium for the first time.

Ghana is the second largest producer of cocoa in the world but cannot be found in the league of 50 top cocoa consuming countries.
The country consumes about 0.53 kilograms (KG) of cocoa-sourced products every year and that is a drop in the ocean when compared to countries such as Switzerland, Australia, Germany, Ireland and Great Britain where an average of eight KG of the products are consumed every year.
When it comes to the golden pod, the country produces what it hardly eats and that is a blow, given the nutritional and health benefits of cocoa.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, has entreated Ghanaians to consume more chocolate and other cocoa products daily since they contained antioxidants to fight the coronavirus disease.
That, he said, would boost their immune system to withstand the infectious disease.
The COCOBOD says research into nutritional and health benefits of cocoa has revealed that it contains iron, magnesium, phosphorus and antioxidants that could fortify one s immune system to resist the damaging effects of COVID-19.
Additionally, eating cocoa could boost one s blood circulation, brain power and enhances general wellbeing of the body.
