On Wednesday, dozens gathered in downtown Detroit to call for an end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian people, following the fighting between the Israel Defense Forces and the militant group Hamas that has left thousands dead. The group marched from the Patrick V. McNamara Federal Building to Detroit’s iconic “Monument to Joe Louis,” a tribute to the late boxer that honors his efforts to fight Jim Crow laws and stands as a symbol against racism. The rally followed a larger pro-Palestine gathering held in Arab-majority Dearborn and a smaller Jewish-led event in downtown Detroit.
