Dimapur, Oct. 6 (EMN): The Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) has extended support and solidarity to the All Nagaland Adhoc Teachers’ Group (ANATG) 2015 batch whose members are currently on hunger strike. KSU in a press release stated that the state government continue to torture and harass the teachers while other states are striving to develop world class school infrastructure and quality education. “The union questions the government how it strives to empower the students without empowering the teachers? When the department’s justification by citing court order is invalidated, there’s is no legitimate ground for denying and delaying the demands of regularisation any further,” KSU stated. The union further appealed to the state government “to ennoble and dignify the teaching profession and resolve the matter with utmost priority and consideration.”
Our Correspondent Kohima, Oct. 5 (EMN): Discontented over the indifferent attitude of the government towards the demand to regularise their services, despite staging protest for the past 10 days, more adhoc teachers joined the ongoing hunger strike outside the Secretariat in Kohima on Wednesday. The All Nagaland Adhoc Teachers’ Group (ANATG) – 2015 batch has been holding agitation since September 26 and hunger strike for six days. Member of ANATG 2015, Bendangtemsu Ozukum, informed that they are planning to intensify the hunger strike. ‘Some of them have volunteered to join (the hunger strike), expressing dissatisfaction at the attitude of the government. Therefore, we are compelled to increase the number,’ he said. Initially, a total of 36 teachers took part in the hunger strike but at least half a dozen were hospitalised over the course of six days. The representation addressed to the chief minister was submitted to his chamber, at the Secretariat, in his absence on Monday. ‘The house (ANATG-2015, 1166 teachers) resolved to submit a direct letter to your table as we believe only your intervention could bring a solution to our sole demand,’ it read, adding that they were “left with no other option” but to protest in the form of an indefinite hunger strike till the matter is resolved. In a press statement, the Congress youth wing expressed dismay over non regularisation of services and keeping the 2017 suitability test results pending, which it said had compelled the teachers to stage a sit-in and hunger strike since September 26. It opined that measures should be taken up immediately to help regularise the services of the aggrieved 1,166 adhoc teachers as the department had said that they were not illegal appointees. The decision to quash the government’s offer through a representation was taken after the agitating adhoc teachers held a series of discussion at Solidarity Park, Kohima on Saturday. The adhoc teachers have been staging a sit-in since Monday, demanding the government to regularise their services. The protest entered the sixth day on Saturday and the second day of hunger strike.
