Moarenla wins inter-collegiate debate contest

Our CorrespondentKohima, Oct. 29 (EMN): Moarenla Jamir from Modern College on Saturday won the 15th edition of the inter-collegiate debate competition held at Sazolie College in Kohima. Jamir, speaking for the motion on the topic “Christianity has brought positive changes in Nagaland,” defeated other 15 competitors representing various colleges to become the champion of this year’s edition. She won a cash prize of INR 10,000 along with a certificate. Speaker from the opposition bench, Khusje Shiu representing Fazl Ali College (FAC), Mokokchung, secured the second position, while the treasury speaker, K Chunchun from Dimapur Government College (DGC), Dimapur, won the third position. Youth told to rebuild trust in Naga society

Our CorrespondentMokokchung, Oct. 2 (EMN): Foreseeing a grim future with disastrous catastrophe in the Naga society due to prevailing lack of trust among the churches and communities, the executive secretary of Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM), Rev. Dr. Mar Pongener, has urged the Nagas to have faith in the Lord wholeheartedly to rebuild the trust. He stated this in his sermon during the Sunday service as the main speaker at the 12th triennial convention of the Nagaland Police Baptist Churches Association Youth Department (NPBCAYD) at New Reserve in Mokokchung, some 10 kilometers away from the district headquarters on October 2. Pongener observed that the spirit of trust was missing in churches, communities and even among various associations and theological institutions. Our CorrespondentKohima, Sep. 29 (EMN): Sensing the rampant use of an adulterated heroin called ‘sunflower’ by youngsters in the society today, the youth department of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) youth department organised a panel discussion on ‘sunflower drug and its effect on young people today’ in Kohima, on Thursday. A senior medical officer at State Mental Institute, Kohima, Dr. Viketoulie Pienyu, observed that drug abuse was a big problem back in the 1990s. “It was the biggest social menace in the society those days. Almost one in every two or three families was affected with drug abuse in Kohima village causing a lot of harms like crime, thefts, getting jailed, being shot by undergrounds etc,” Dr. Pienyu said. He stated that a slight decline was witnessed in the early part of the 2000.
