Photo : YONHAP News The UN Security Council has expressed support for the agreement reached by the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) to end the post-coup violence in Myanmar, and urged its speedy implementation.
Foreign news outlets report the UNSC issued a statement after receiving a briefing from UN Special Envoy for Myanmar Christine Schraner Burgener.
The Security Council stressed the importance of the ASEAN agreement and urged a five-point action plan to peacefully resolve the Myanmar crisis.
The plan calls on leaders of the ten ASEAN members who took part in a special summit last weekend to implement an immediate end to violence, restraint on all concerned parties and the provision of humanitarian assistance.

The Vietnamese Embassy in India is making every effort to protect citizens, whilst striving to ensure their health, safety, and lives amid a range of unpredictable and dangerous developments relating to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the South Asian nation.
Do Thanh Hai, counselor of the Vietnamese Embassy in India, shared these ongoing efforts taken to protect lives during an interview recently granted to a VOV correspondent based in New Delhi.
More than 520 people have died since the military overthrew elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1st, halting Myanmarâs decade-old experiment in democracy, according to figures from monitors confirmed by Burgener to the security council.
On Saturday the military launched the first air strikes in Karen state in 20 years after a rebel group seized a military base, raising fears of a return to armed ethnic conflict in the ethnically diverse nation.
âThe militaryâs cruelty is too severe and many [armed ethnic fighters] are taking clear stances of opposition, increasing the possibility of civil war at an unprecedented scale,â Ms Burgener said.
