straight up guy. he is a person who speaks honestly and speaks from the heart. but let me be very clear. this is a legislative process. thank the president for embracing both of these bills. and and embracing martin s legacy and embracing martin s family, and embracing john robert lewis. but this is a legislative process and the congressional black caucus, for one, has been a enormous and outstanding leader in engaging with all of the senators and all of our members in the house and we voted successfully for both of those bills. i wrote senator manchin a five-page letter, and laid out my life story, the story of my constituents, the story of those of us in the south. those of us whose districts have already been written out because of oppressive, suppressive voting laws. i don t put myself up as the singular important aspect of this but it is the american people. and we gave this process a very long time. but yet, i am willing to give it more. i believe a rolling-talking
majority, that believed in us delivering something tangible for them, and we definitely can t allow republicans who have been focused on obstruction to right? to be able to lobby democrats to actually get in their own way. congressman, i don t need to tell you because i know you heas all the time what a tough moment this is for many americans. we re still struggling through a deadly pandemic. partisanship seems to be getting worse, the country is grappling with civil unrest. you write if you can push through whatever is happening today, tomorrow might be worse, but it could also be better. the only option for the human spirit is to keep going. to you how does that apply in this moment? well, i mean it s been my life story to really look for the opportunities that allow us to push forward. this is why i say, you know,

in? do we want to live in a country that is so far to the left, and that is moving toward socialism, or a country in which the american people no longer trust the leaders in government, no longer have any respect for someone in the oval office? or is there a better opportunity. dana: so this election, that s what 2020 s going to be about. as you had this last few days launching your book from the ground up which i spent the last few days reading and really enjoyed. but have you had any sort of worries that maybe you re gonna lose friends along the way? i don t know if you ve heard from people in your circle. it s quite eye opening. you even got heckled by somebody. i m assuming you have no idea who that was or what group that was. in terms of it being clarifying to you, like how hard this could actually be, has that sunk in? well, if you think about my life story, i grew up in public housing in brooklyn new york.
