A new bill seeking to decriminalize sex work in Kenya has been tabled in Parliament.
The Penal Code Amendment Bill 2021 is sponsored by Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria and is set for the first reading in Parliament.
The bill seeks to delete Section 182 of the Penal Code which gives police the powers to arrest those engaging in commercial sex in public places, beggars, and drunkards on grounds that they are idle and disorderly.
Gikaria, a two-time MP, argues that law enforcement officers have used the powers to harass innocent civilians.
