Kenya MPs Seek Sh11 7 Billion for Free Luxury Cars and Send-Off Packages for Their Aides

Kenyan Members of Parliament have petitioned the Treasury to set aside an additional Sh11.7 billion for free cars among other expenditures.  As per Business Daily, Parliament’s Budget and Appropriations Committee is seeking Sh4.2 billion car grant for MPs who will be elected in the forthcoming elections, a Sh500 million top-up on their current subsidized mortgage of Sh20 million each, and Sh373 million for medical bills for MPs who will unsuccessfully defend their seats in the August 9th elections.

Kenya Government Assures Foreign Envoys of Smooth Handover of Power After August Elections

The Kenyan government has reiterated its commitment to ensure a smooth transition of power ahead of the August 9th elections. Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i in a statement on Monday assured development partners that plans are in place to ensure that there will be a peaceful handover of instruments of power to the next government. At the same time, the government pledged to deploy and mobilize security agencies to provide support to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) during the forthcoming elections.

Three Terror Suspects Caught Taking Photos of Kakamega State Lodge and a Judge s Residence

Police in Busia are holding three terror suspects after they were found taking photos of government premises in Kakamega. The suspects reportedly took pictures and videos of the State Lodge, a judge’s residence, and regional coordinators’ administration offices in Kakamega on Sunday, according to a police report. Their suspicious activities were noticed by a police constable attached to Kakamega police station and a GSU officer stationed at Kakamega State Lodge.

Kenyan Woman Gets Right to Bury Her Mother Who Died in the US

A US court has granted a Kenyan woman the right to bury her mother who died in Seattle, Washington last month. Commissioner Pro Tem Kevin Boyle of Pierce County Superior Court in Washington granted Esther Nyawira her mother Jedidah Wambui’s remains for dignified burial. Jedidah’s husband Douglas Johnson was seeking to cremate her body against her family’s wish. “We were prepared for a big fight, but we saw the hand of God,” Kennedy Komu, son-in-law to Jedidah, said.

Eight Chinese Nationals Fined Sh50,000 Each for Working in Kenya without Permits

A Nairobi court has slapped eight Chinese nationals with a fine of Sh50,000 each for working in Kenya without business permits. The foreigners were arrested in Imara Daima, Nairobi last week in a joint operation conducted by officers from the National Police Service (NPS), and Immigration Department. Besides the fine, the magistrate’s court ordered the Chinese nationals to regularize their immigration status.
