21st Annual Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing Celebration Saturday On Saturday, October 14, 2023, from 12-4:30 p.m., community members are invited to celebrate Black history at Missouri’s first nationally recognized Underground Railroad site, the historic Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing on the Mississippi Greenway (Riverfront Trail). The event will include a day of educational entertainment in the form of a historical showcase of Black music through the ages. Whether it’s a local band playing traditional tunes to a costumed performer re-enacting a scene to set the stage, guests will watch and hear the decades unfold.
Art at the Table: Uncle Nearest Dinner A tour of "The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century" will be followed by a dinner and presentation led by Uncle Nearest’s LaVar Douglas that begins at 6 pm. This five-course dinner by Executive Chef Joe Gardner will pair dishes with whiskey by Uncle Nearest. Douglas will give a tour of the brand’s history and make pairings to each of the dishes. Dinner includes whiskey pairings, tax, gratuity, and parking. Douglas and Gardner will make the rounds after dinner for a Q&A with diners.
Artist Talk: Hajra Waheed Artist Hajra Waheed speaks about the ideas and stories that inspired “Hajra Waheed: A Solo Exhibition” on the occasion of its opening at CAM. This free event will include ASL interpretation.
