A murder convict who was on the run for the last 15 years after escaping from jail ran out of luck after Goa Crime Branch Police identified and arrested him at Purba Medinipur district in West Bengal.
The Supreme Court Friday commuted the death sentence awarded to a man for the rape and murder of a widow in 1998, noting he was in solitary confinement in jail for about 10 years.
The top court criticised the subordinate courts for convicting the appellant on the basis of inadequate evidence, and stressed the state's responsibility to provide the accused with competent lawyers and adequate time.
