The 19th-century Afghan church was built in memory of those killed in first Anglo-Afghan War and is currently being restored. The work started in March this year after the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee gave a nod for the restoration of the Grade 1 heritage structure.
David Cardoz, the supervising architect, said that the heritage church's roof has deteriorated over the last few years and thus they will be comprehensively repairing and restoring the same.
Mahatma Gandhi had lived in Mani Bhavan for 17 years from 1917 to 1934. The call for Satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act that curbed the freedom of the Press was given by the Mahatma from there.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee have prayed that the Public Interest Litigations raising issues around the memorial should be dismissed.
