georgetown law professor, msnbc analyst, mr. butler, it s good to see you tonight. ahmaud arbery s mother makes an interesting case that the department of justice, the federal government, doesn t often pursue these cases. in fact, it s the first time one of these has been successfully prosecuted according to ben crump in the state of georgia ever. why is that? so, ali, this prosecution was symbolic in part because the three defendants had already been sentence to life in prison in the state murder case. the federal convictions are insurance in the unlikely event that the state convictions are overturned. more importantly, the jury verdict represents an official an official recognition that mr. arbery was killed because he was black. race didn t come up in the state file, because the prosecutors didn t have to prove racial animus, in order to lend their
georgia. now, any fair investigation will weigh all of the evidence regardless of one s feelings about the person or their politics. it doesn t just weigh one statement or action. that s what is bad news for trump and what the biden administration increasingly sees it can t just move on from. if we re going to have an accountable democracy in this nation. the mounting stories from the trump white house add to the evidence against donald trump. they raise questions about whether the man tweeting stop the steal when he was allowed to tweet, questioning whether he was engaging in enough concrete actions with the requisite mental intent to cross the legal line of trying to steal votes himself. i m joined now tonight on this story by cornell, the former msnbc analyst, and joan walsh from the nation magazine. i put it that way, joan, because this is serious stuff that you can t just walk away from if you think it was that bad. if you don t and evidence the cuts the other way, and it was
mcconnell continues to ignore calls to end the senate s five-week long august renecessary order to hold a vote on a bill passed by the house that would expand background checks. despite this weekend s tragic mass shootings in el paso and dayton, it is unlikely he will bring back lawmakers. republicans on capitol hill have no reason to believe that mcconnell who is home resting from a fall would call the senate back into session. he has opposed legislation in the aftermath of every previous mass shooting. joining me now, hans nichols who is in louisville, kentucky, for us, mitch mcconnell s home state and platco seni politico seniod msnbc analyst. hans, do mcconnell s constituents want stronger gun measures? reporter: well, it s hard to say, right? it seems like attitudes are shifting ever so slightly, but there isn t a fundamental change in thinking here. we re here, as you mentioned,
