Been following this story for a year. Katherine, this report was so shocking to so many people when it came out, but you also were doing your own reporting on campus about the incidents of Sexual Assault. Did you hear this specific story and were you at all involved in investigating the details of it . I was not. I heard rumors. I was investigating the universitys Sexual Assault policies in september. And i heard around october that a story was going to come out. But im im afraid were going to lose sight of whats really important here. Sexual assault is a very real issue at every college across the nation. And my fear is this is going to trivialalize and Rolling Stone said there were skepcys in jackies article, im afraid thats going to trivialize very real accounts of Sexual Assault. When you talked to the university leadership, was there any pushback on whether or not the university was properly handling Sexual Assaults and whether or not there were Sexual Assaults happening. I dont t
White house and we should not gloss over the fact that this was something that was genuinely brought about by grassroots activism. By some very, very aggressive very canny grassroots activism. The president yes it is really theres an old adage in politics, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. And this is its very similar to dont ask, dont tell. Where we saw activists chain themselves to the white house. They werent quiet. They didnt just kind of allow, you know, get in line. They were very loud. And they didnt just attack the people who they were most diametrically opposed to. I talked with one of the founders of united we dream last night and well talk to her again after the speech but she talked about this decision that they came to when they realized that they were banging their head against a brick wall when it came to talking to republicans like john boehner and the other House Republicans who, inarguably, were the most responsible for their plight and so they decided, listen, we wa
Durban. I have been talking to some immigration officials and people who have some knowledge of the plan. And it seems to fall into line with what the president said he was going to do and what white house officials have been telling me he wants to be aggressive, but as aggressive as he can be, given the legal parameters that hes been given by his Justice Department as theyve been looking into just how far he can go. So, we want it ko tovr as many as 5 million people. And we should keep an eye on expanding the doca program, the Deferred Program and not necessarily parents of dreamers, which is something a lot of democrats had been pushing for. Also look for some changes in the work permits. Folks who work in silicon valley, other hightech areas. So, those are some of the areas that it will cover. But we dont expect to get the final details until tomorrow. Although, as i say, democrats are waiting to be briefed tonight at the white house over dinner. Nbcs Chris Jansing at the white hous
News tonight. The Government Shutdown being pushed by the hard republican right. That and the first strike just scored by a secretive figure in the Hillary Clinton camp to undercut the candidate some believe could become her number one hazard on the road to nomination. Lets go to the story thats fired up the streets of new york. Nbcs Stephanie Gosk is with the protesters in foley square in lower manhattan. Stephanie . Good evening, chris. These protesters are on the move. If its anything like last night, theyll continue to be on the move. Minimum destruction. Its unclear where theyre going to head. Early estimates there are about 500,000 people in this crowd right now. So they are moving slowly. Theres also a pretty heavy Police Presence here. One of the things thats angered this crowd particularly is the secrecy of that grand injury process. And they were hopeful that all of that evidence, the same way it was released in the ferguson case would be released in the garner case. Instead
This clergy meeting. One of the interesting things he said to me yesterday, this was a sentiment also echoed by captain ron johnson as well, this idea that we are going to see these widespread potentially violent clashes once again. He disputes that. He does not think were going to see a remake of what we saw 110 days ago or so. For two reasons. One, primarily, Law Enforcement has spent a great deal of time pounding the pavement in these communities, in these neighborhoods, talking to people who not just folks who live in the neighborhoods, but the protest organizers as well. As you know, theyve sort of reached a consensus on a handful of these rules of engagement. Thats one reason. The second reason is, he thinks that that the protests themselves have been organized and structured in such a fash n fashifashio fashion theyve had theyve had training in peaceful protesting. He thinks that because of that as well, youre going to see largely peaceful protests tonight. Captain johnson also
