Growing interest in the vaccine
At Mountaire Farms’ poultry plants in Millsboro and Selbyville, the company is waiting for the call that the COVID-19 vaccine is on its way, said Catherine Bassett, the company s director of communications and community relations.
“We think it’s going to be the most important tool we have to stop the spread of this virus,” Bassett said.
Both Mountaire and Perdue Farms, two of the major poultry companies in Sussex County and Delmarva, have started planning for the vaccine since word spread of its availability.

Mountaire Farms employees at its Selbyville plant sent a letter to company officials asking to no longer be represented by the Teamsters Union, according to a company news release.
“We are tired and simply want them out of our lives since they serve no purpose, a letter addressed to management stated. We trust that our company will do the right thing.”
Mountaire notified Teamsters Local 355 by letter Monday, Dec. 21, that it would no longer recognize the union as the collective bargaining representative of employees at the plant, according to the release.
Employees will no longer have union dues and assessments withheld from their paychecks. The employees that were represented by the Teamsters work in various departments at the facility, including live haul, live receiving, box room, cooler, shipping and sanitation, according to the release.
