Going on there. Absolutely, john. It took firefighters nearly four hours to get the fire under control. Just before 9 00. They can finally say they have things contained inside this building. A big reason for that is that the redwood city fire marshall told us this building is so old that it was not required to have sprinklers, and there were no sprinklers inside this building. If you look behind me, there are a lot of firefighters inside this apartment. Theyre saying it was the top floor of the building, inside an apartment, where they believe the fire began. It then spread down to the third floor and most critically, they say it spread out into the hallway, and that is what made it so difficult for everyone to get out. Reporter breaking out around 5 00 a. M. , many people inside still sound asleep. I heard the alarm, and the firemen started banging on the door. I peeked in the hallway, and there was smoke. I ran back in and got my shoes, got my purse, and ran out. It shows rescuerers

We have team coverage, ktvus Paul Chambers talked to people who took extreme measures to escape the fire but we begin with janine de la vega who joins us live from the scene, good afternoon.
