Sussex County NJ has a plan to pay back solar project costs

New Jersey Herald NEWTON The county freeholders said they have a plan that will save more than $2 million as they pay back the loan that financed Sussex County s solar energy project nearly a decade ago. The county was stuck paying off the debts on the $28 million project when the developer went bankrupt. The county was left in turmoil and pointing fingers of blame. The plan to refinance the remaining debt will go before a public hearing on Dec. 22. The meeting will be held virtually at 9 a.m., moved to a Tuesday morning because of the Christmas holiday. The plan had Sussex County guarantee the bonds to pay for the project by developer Sunlight General to install solar panels at many county and local government and school buildings. Those entities would pay Sunlight for power, saving them money, and Sunlight would pay off the bonds.
