Copper, cattle, cotton, citrus and climate were mainstays in these parts, and people were proud of it.
Now itâs 2021, and while Arizonaâs weather remains a huge deal, some of the other Cs are withering. Cattle, which once comprised half the Arizona economy, is down to a modest 5%. We also used to grow most of the worldâs Pima cotton. Today? Arizona accounts for only about 2% of the global supply.
Fear not, however. Arizona has an abundance of a new C Iâd like to add to the mix â crazies.Â
Iâve been chronicling this stateâs culture and newsmakers since 1995, and if thereâs one thing you can be sure of, itâs this: Whenever some big national story involving insane behavior erupts, Arizona will make news.Â
In Arizona’s formative years – say before the Valley constructed an actual freeway system – the state’s economy and reputation rested on what early Arizonans called “the Five C’s.”

Donald Trump, Jake Angeli
President Donald J. Trump should pardon the so-called QAnon Shaman who stormed the US Capitol wearing a bizarre outfit, his lawyer says. 33-year-old Jacob Chansley was simply acting on Trump s invitation when he and others were led into the Capitol on January 6 , his attorney Al Watkins said. At the time, Congress had begun formally counting the Electoral College votes to certify Joe Biden has the next President of the United States, the New York Post reported. âThe words and invitation of a president are supposed to mean something,â Watkins said in a statement to the Kansas City Star. According to him, Chansley âtook seriously the countless messages of President Trump. Like tens of millions of other Americans, Chansley felt â for the first time in his life â as though his voice was being heard.â
