The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will come to order. We thank all Senate Foreign Relations Committee will come to order. We thanks all of those in attendance. In rolling out the new south asia strategy last august the administration underscored the United States hard fought security gangs in afghanistan and reiterated helping establish a political resolution. With recent reports of shrinking government control of territory, continued high attrition of Afghan Forces, and deadly attacks in kabul by isis, it is clear that the foundation is a long way off. But we are encouraged by the troop strength authorized in the new strategy at 12,300 military personnel with an additional thousand on request which is approaching the level our force commander requested in 2014. Our nato and nonnato allies have also reinforced troop commitments and support to Afghan Forces through 2020. U. S. Commander general nicholson says he now has what he needs to assist afghans in achieving a sustainable out
Well break down the hard choices facing the white house and have reaction from influential voices on capitol hill, senator ted cruz and congressman joaquin castro. Plus, after the flood. Pretty insane. As the waters recede, in texas, the recovery begins. We have a long way to go. But the water is disappearing. But with hundreds of thousands of homes damaged or destroyed and tens of thousands living in shelters, how will the survivors pick up the pieces . Are they getting the help they need . We need to understand. This is going to take a long time. Were here in texas. In the air. On the ground with governor greg abbott. From the white house to your house, we take on the moments that matter, this week. Good morning. We are here in houston, texas, covering that disastrous flood. You can see the debris behind me. A major domestic crisis. Well get to all of that. But first, a Major International crisis breaking overnight. Just before midnight, u. S. Authorities detected an earthquake in no
Filed with senator gillibrand about three years ago. This just simply provides more flexibility for our military families. The strength of the military is in the military family structure, and what this does is allow the family to either move early or stay longer at these assignments. Normally they are two to threeyear assignments. Lots can happen in two or three years, but not Everything Else just perfectly works out in two or three years. So for employment reasons or for education reasons, if a family decides it is to their advantage to use the Family Support that the military provides, housing and other, and let the families stay another two months to finish school for a teaching contract to end or some other spouse activity to come to a reasonable conclusion or frankly to do just the opposite, to go to the new assignment that you know you already have, but to do that just a little bit earlier so that it works better for the family, to start school on time, to start a job on time th
Doneford testifying on a military strategy on south asia that includes india pack tan and afghanistan. This hearing is just getting underway. These fundamental issues do need to be discussed openly for the American People and for those who have sacrificed over the last 16 years. Thats the reason we are here today. Mr. Smith. Thank you mr. Chairman. And i think the chairman raised all the questions that need to be raised. This is offense a revery difficult part of the world. We clearly have National Security interests in how afghanistan is governed and pakistan as well. Going back to 2001 when the then Afghanistan Government led by the taliban allowed al qaeda to have safe haven to plot and plan terrorist attacks against the u. S. , including 9 11. Making sure we dont return to toes days is clearly in our National Security interests. What is not as clear is how we do that and what the cost is of our current effort. Afghanistan is a very difficult place to govern. I think one of the thin
