What does a town do when its faced with a bear problem? Well, if you’re the town of Takikawa, on Japan’s Hokkaido island, the logical answer is to install a pair of robotic wolves.
Designed by machinery maker Ohta Seiki, the Monster Wolf consists of a shaggy body measuring 120 centimeters long and standing 90 centimeters, as well as infrared motion sensors. If the motion sensor is tripped, its LED eyes glow red and a loudspeaker blares one of about 60 noises ranging from howls to heavy machinery. This display is intended to threaten away anything in its surroundings.
