Another court rules against reopening of Eastern Cape, Garden Route beaches Updated Jacaranda FM Share this: Residents and businesses in the Garden Route district have suffered another blow after a second court ruled against the reopening of beaches in the area.  Getty Images The High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday dismissed an application by AfriForum and a small group of local businesses to declare the closure of beaches as unconstitutional.  President Cyril Ramaphosa s decision to close some beaches during the festive season to manage the potential outbreak of Covid-19 infections is among the more contentious regulations.  All Eastern Cape beaches and the Garden Route District beaches in the Western Cape will remain closed until early January.

The North Gauteng High Court has dismissed AfriForum’s application to have the closure of beaches overturned. This after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that all beaches in the Eastern Cape, Garden Route, would be closed from 16 December to 3 January. He also said all beaches in KwaZulu-Natal would be closed on 16, 25, 26 and 31 December, as well as from 1 January to 3 January. The Afrikaner lobby group had submitted a motion to the court in Pretoria on 15 December to have the regulations declared unconstit

AfriForum’s legal team had lodged an application to have beaches along the Garden Route and the Eastern Cape reopened and have Covid-19 regulations 69(12) (a), (b), (c) and (d) declared unconstitutional.
