Australians re-join the international 470 fleet at last stop before Tokyo

Eighty-one teams from 25 countries are contesting the last major 470 event before Tokyo 2020 and the first international regatta since August 2019 for Australia s Mat Belcher and Will Ryan in the men s division and Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries in the women s division. Many of the European and northern hemisphere teams are match fit having contested the class world championship at the same venue back in March. Travel restrictions and safety concerns kept the Australians training hard and working towards their goals on home waters.

Lilley completes a team blessed with a mix of youth, experience, and a history of success. Australia s sailors will head to Japan carrying the hopes of a nation after collecting six gold medals across the past three Olympics. It s always a good feeling to be honored with the opportunity to represent our country and our sport, said Lilley at the announcement. The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron sailor finished eighth at his first Olympic Games five years ago in Rio de Janeiro.

After ten races over five days, Lilley finished the event in a strong eighth place. Defending European Champion and dual Olympian Zsombor Berecz (HUN) won the regatta ahead of Rio Olympic Champion Giles Scott (GB) with Switzerland s Nils Theuninck third. The 2021 Finn European Championships saw 49 sailors from 29 nations battling it out on the waters of Vilamoura on the south coast of Portugal. Many sailors, including Lilley, used the regatta as a warmup event to the crucial 2021 Finn Gold Cup, the World Championships of the Olympic Finn Class, in Porto, Portugal in three weeks time.

Jerwood and de Vries secure their tickets to Tokyo

After breakout international performances in August 2019, they presumed that call was not too far off. However 2020 did not go as planned for the Perth-based duo, with COVID-19 and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics giving them cause to wonder if it would come at all. So when the call came through earlier this month from Australian Sailing Director - Tokyo 2020 Olympic Campaign, Iain Murray, to tell them they were Australia s Women s 470 selection for this year s games it was a mix of relief and jubilation according to Jerwood.
