Maloney takes early Finn Gold Cup lead as champions reflect on Olympic threat

Saturday, 8 May 2021 New Zealand’s Andy Maloney, one of the victorious America’s Cup crew earlier this year in Auckland, took a first-day lead in the 65 th Finn Gold Cup at Porto - which double as the Finn World Championships - after placing third and second in the first two races. Meanwhile his America’s Cup teammate and defending champion Josh Junior is in fifth position after placing tenth and fifth. Junior, one of four previous world champions involved in this prestigious event, hasn’t raced a major Finn event since his victory in 2019. Switzerland’s current world number one Nils Theuninck is four points adrift of Maloney on nine points, having finished second and seventh.

Jake Lilley - 2021 Open and U23 Finn European Championship © Joao Costa Ferreira 98 days out from the Tokyo Olympic Games, Australian Sailing Team Finn sailor and Rio Olympian Jake Lilley (QLD) has wrapped up the 2021 Open Finn European Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal with a top ten finish in a world-class fleet. After ten races over five days, Lilley finished the event in a strong eighth place. Defending European Champion and dual Olympian Zsombor Berecz (HUN) won the regatta ahead of Rio Olympic Champion Giles Scott (GB) with Switzerland s Nils Theuninck third. The 2021 Finn European Championships saw 49 sailors from 29 nations battling it out on the waters of Vilamoura on the south coast of Portugal. Many sailors, including Lilley, used the regatta as a warmup event to the crucial 2021 Finn Gold Cup, the World Championships of the Olympic Finn Class, in Porto, Portugal in three weeks time.
