Read our Voter Guide at voterguide.dallasnews.com.(Eric Gay / The Associated Press) District 6: Michael Wood (R) Michael Wood, 34, set himself apart in a huge field of 23 candidates that will likely result in a runoff to fill the seat of late Congressman Ron Wright, who died of COVID-19 in February. Wood is a Fort Worth businessman and military veteran who we think embodies key conservative principles of limited government, low taxes, reducing debt, reforming entitlement programs, religious liberty, free trade and support of Second Amendment rights. But what sets him apart from other Republicans is his willingness to tackle hard truths about his own party. Wood said the GOP has become a “cult of personalit

Our recommendation for Dallas City Council District 6

Our recommendation for Dallas City Council District 6 Incumbent Omar Narvaez faces Monica Alonzo, Wendi Macon and Earl D. Thomas There may be no Dallas City Council district with as much opportunity as District 6. The district sits along the city’s western edge like a barbell, encompassing West Dallas, the Asian Trade District, Bachman Lake and established but gentrifying single-family neighborhoods north of Northwest Highway. Omar Narvaez, 47, has represented the area since 2017 and has consistently grown as a council member with the ability to balance growth while respecting existing neighborhoods. That is crucial to success in this district, where fear of displacement runs strong but where many property owners, including longtime residents, want change and reinvigoration of their streets.

Our recommendation for Dallas City Council, District 8

Our recommendation for Dallas City Council, District 8 Incumbent Tennell Atkins faces a trio of challengers. In the four-way race for Dallas City Council District 8, our nod reluctantly goes to incumbent Tennell Atkins. Atkins, 64, represented District 8 from 2007 to until he was term-limited in 2015. After sitting on the sidelines for two years, voters returned him to office in 2017 and reelected him in 2019. This year, he is seeking his seventh two-year term. After Atkins’ 12 years on the council, which have been unremarkable, it is probably time for new leadership and fresh views on economic development, affordable housing, education, the paucity of job opportunities and other persistent issues in this high-need district.

After a Year of Pandemic Pain, Some Dallas Restaurateurs Are Ready to Get Political

On March 8, 2020, a crowd converged on Four Corners Brewing Co. for a festival dedicated to Filipino food. Popular, rising-star pop-up businesses run by Filipino-American chefs with day jobs  served more than a thousand customers that day. At 2 p.m., the wait for a bowl of noodles was 50 minutes, and another line was keeping people standing for an hour. It felt like every food lover in Dallas was there. In one line, I chatted with Texas Monthly taco editor José Ralat, and at the ice cream booth, D Magazine dining critic Eve Hill-Agnus worked serving scoops. None of us knew this would be the last time the Dallas food community partied together. Two days later, Dallas County reported its first known case of COVID-19. On March 17, the county’s dining rooms and bars closed by public order.
