On April 17th, 2021, acclaimed anime director
Osamu Kobayashi passed away from kidney cancer at the age of 57. An extraordinary voice in the world of anime, fans and industry folks alike took to social media to lament the loss of a creative mind gone too soon, myself included. Many shared their favorite clips and images of anime like
Paradise Kiss, two of the most popular titles he directed. But while many of his works are perfect examples of how anime can touch us deeply and spark our imagination, he somehow never became a household name among anime fans. Maybe part of that had to do with his somewhat atypical career path. While Kobayashi was a huge fan of anime and film in general, he first started out as a designer and illustrator, with seemingly no intention to seriously work in anime. At least, not right away.

Naruto Shippūden director, animator and scriptwriter Osamu Kobayashi has died during the evening of April 17, 2021. Word of the anime figure’s death first surfaced on his Twitter with a message that read (translated from Japanese), “Osamu Kobayashi, Aged 57-He set off for heaven last night. It’s unfortunate to say that I ran out of strength after battling kidney cancer for the past two year…It is regretful because there are still things I wanted to do and works I wanted to make. When I am reborn again, I will surely make some great works! Adios. The eternal 23-year-old.”

Fans were shocked to learn of Osamu Kobayashi’s death earlier this month. We look back at the life of Naruto: Shippuden’s iconic director and tributes from fans.
Osamu Kobayashi is known for his work as a director on ‘Naruto: Shippuden’ (2016), where he worked on a filler arc and was praised for his work on making the arc a success. He also worked on ‘The Last: Naruto the Movie’ (2014) on the concept art for the film.
