Monaghan Fire and Civil Protection has advised farmers to undertake a risk assessment prior to notifying their local authority of controlled burning.
The advice follows a series of wildfires across the island of Ireland, which has seen hundreds of hectares of upland and SPA areas scorched.
It is an offence to carry out controlled burning of land or vegetation between 1 March and 31 September of any year.
Controlled burning is used to describe the planned and deliberate use of fire as a land management tool.

Firefighters from Cavan town were called to tackle a tractor fire in Cavan on Monday night, 26 April.
The fire took place in the Butlersbridge area. Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) was used to extinguish the blaze.
“This flame retardant foam smothers the fire and is more effective than water alone in these scenarios,” a spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, local fire services were called to deal with an incident of illicit burning of waste on a farm premise in the Inniskeen area of Co Monaghan on Thursday.

Firefighters from Monaghan Fire and Civil Protection facilitated the rescue of cattle from a slurry pit in Castleblayney earlier this week.
Speaking to
AgriLand, Dermot Brannigan, chief fire officer with Monaghan Fire and Civil Protection, said:
“Castleblayney Fire Service from Monaghan Fire and Civil Protection assisted in the scene safety to aid the rescue of five cows that had entered the tank of a slotted house on a rural farm in the Castleblayney area of Co. Monaghan.
Fire crews made the scene safe and monitored concentrations of various gases associated with agitated slurry during the removal of effluent from the tank.
