Daxesh Mavani of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been elected as the mayor of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) in Gujarat, India. The election took place amid high drama, as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nominated one of its turncoat corporators for the post. The BJP has 93 corporators in the 120-seat SMC, while the AAP is the only opposition party with 27.
Mawani has roots in Saurashtra while Patil and Tripathi are originally from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, respectively. Patel is from Surat. All the newly-appointed leaders had contested for the first time and won municipal elections in 2021.
