Weekly Press Briefing on Coronavirus Disease Outbreak

Background Information The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to about 220 countries and territories with more than 111.2 million cases; and claimed the lives of over 2.4 million people worldwide. In Africa, over 3.8 million cases have been reported in all countries, with about 101,000 deaths. Africa CDC continue to work with Member States to ensure an effective response to the outbreak by Member States, including maintaining key public health measures which have helped to slow down the pandemic on the continent during the first wave. Those measures remain critical in the wake of a more deadly second wave of infections and a more contiguous new variant of the virus now circulating in many countries.
