Media Announcement for the coverage of the 34th AU Summit: Online registration for journalists now open

Share: January 28, 2021 The Directorate of Information and Communication (DIC) of the African Union Commission (AUC) hereby announces that, the online registration for journalists interested to cover the thirty eighth (38th ) Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 34th African Union (AU) Summit scheduled to take place from 3-7 February 2021, has been launched on the AU website: www.au.int Note that, a dedicated meeting link for the media will be shared to all registered journalists to enable them follow the official opening and closing ceremony of the virtual meetings. A media advisory note explaining all the detailed arrangements for media coverage of the 34th AU Summit will be posted subsequently on the AU Summit web page.

Weekly Press Briefing on Coronavirus Disease Outbreak

Background Information The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to about 220 countries and territories with more than 98.7 million cases; and claimed the lives of over 2.1 million people worldwide. In Africa, over 3.4 million cases have been reported in all countries, with nearly 86,000 deaths. Africa CDC continue to work with Member States to ensure an effective response to the outbreak by Member States, including maintaining key public health measures which have helped to slow down the pandemic on the continent during the first wave. Those measures remain crucial as many countries tackle a second wave of infections and a new variant of the virus in more than 15 countries.

Africa CDC continue to work with Member States to ensure an effective response to the outbreak by Member States, including maintaining key public health measures which have helped to slow down the pandemic on the continent during the first wave. Those measures remain crucial as some countries are already experiencing a second wave of infections. Dr Nkengasong briefing this week will cover regular updates on the COVID-19 situation and Africa CDC response activities across the continent. The Director will also emphasize the urgent need for member states to step up the joint efforts to acquire vaccines and begain immunizing the population as the second wave of COVID19 infections escalates.
