Residents fear Greenbelt path for wheelchairs will draw bikes

A war of words erupted Tuesday as Hermosa Beach City Council members tangled with dozens of residents during a discussion of the future of the Greenbelt, called by some “the crown jewel of the city.”
At issue was the funding of a study that officials hope will “determine the feasibility of installing an accessible surface path on the Greenbelt to provide a firm, natural looking path that increases accessibility for the disabled and boosts accessibility for all,” according to a staff report.
Diversity of opinion was articulated early in the debate by residents Kent Allen and Raymond Jackson.

After reading about the findings, Moira Nelson from West Kirby contacted the
Globe to share her own experiences with her 27-year-old son, Tom, who resides in a supported living house in Birkenhead. She said: Tom has Down s Syndrome, Autism, profound and multiple learning difficulties, resulting in no functional speech and no road sense. He has had a blue badge since he was a child. Now as an adult, his difficulties, including his inability to understand how cars move about a carpark, have not lessened in any way. One would, as a parent, presume that he would have been granted approval on renewal.

Title of county commissioner will replace freeholder as panel reorganizes for 2021
The five officials who comprise Monmouth County’s governing body will reorganize for 2021 in a meeting to be held at 4 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Collins Arena on the campus of Brookdale Community College, Lincroft.
The 2021 reorganization meeting will mark a milestone in Monmouth County government as the panel changes its centuries-old name from the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders to the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners.
The name change complies with legislation Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law in 2020 that became effective on Jan. 1. The legislation requires the title of “chosen freeholder” to be changed to “county commissioner” and all “boards of chosen freeholders” to be known as “boards of county commissioners.”
